1 Month In

One month into working for myself and I feel like I’ve gotten to grips with a routine for the most part. At the moment that routine looks like me getting up around 8-8:30am and trying to make it to a local coffee shop for 9am. I find it much easier to get out of the house to get work done.

In a months time I’ll be moving away from my current residence in Cork city and when I settle in my new place I’ll be looking to get a place at a local co-working place where I know I’ll have access to power, a seat and I won’t feel like I’m imposing. While fine in the short term, longer-term I’d prefer a more permanent location.

A big thing over the next few months will be the improvement of my income situation. I’ve quit my job and my small side projects aren’t bringing enough to make me “Ramon profitable” yet. I think that “Ramon profitable” for me would probably be about €1,000 per month. Just enough money to get by, pay rent and basic food, etc. At the moment I’d say I’ve approx. €200 – €500 per month coming in the door so there’s a good bit to go yet.

Most of the main features have been build out over the last year and a half but a few still remain. The market is fairly saturated by other players with various other management systems. At times doubt creeps in, anxiety spikes and I can feel the fight or flight response kicking in. It’s so easy to say that it’s better to work on a new idea with less competition and start on something new. On one hand, it’s important to be aware of the sunk cost fallacy and not let it affect my decisions but on the other hand, I’ve had many more failures in my life so far because of the decision to bail on my current project and start something shinier than I have wasting time on building something out. As long as I am learning my failures are not failures.

I think there is enough of a market for me to grab to let me live a comfortable life, learn new skills, and apply these learnings business in the future. Business is inherently a competition. I need to embrace this and look to outcompete the competition on all fronts, be better, and offer more value to my end customers. Let’s see where I am in a year’s time.
